Authorities have named 20-year-old Ryan Romero Encinas as the main suspect in the deadly shooting of 19-year-old Minhaj Jamshidi, in a horrific incident that has shook the University of Arizona and the surrounding Tucson community. Residents, staff, and students at the University of Arizona are shocked and terrified after the late-night shooting, which happened on Sunday. Law enforcement is still actively searching for the perpetrator.
Romero Encinas, who has been missing since the shooting, is regarded as armed and dangerous, according to the University of Arizona Police Department (UAPD). The suspect is currently being sought after and apprehended by the UAPD, FBI, and US Marshals Service in concert. Romero Encinas is still at large, which heightens the urgency of the inquiry, even after several search warrants were executed at off-campus places where he was thought to have been hiding.
The incident happened on Sunday night about 11:30 p.m. close to one of the University of Arizona’s residence buildings. According to reports, Encinas and Jamshidi got into a fight at the start of the disagreement, which later turned violent. Students went into a frenzy as witnesses claimed to hear gunshots reverberate over the normally calm campus. Even though first responders made every effort to save Jamshidi, he passed away at the scene from his wounds. Emergency services were contacted right away.
A tight lockdown has been in place at the University of Arizona ever since the event, and more law enforcement officers are on duty around the school and its environs. As the manhunt is still ongoing, university officials have repeatedly updated the community and alerted students, teachers, and staff to be on the lookout and to take the appropriate safety precautions. Along with offering mental health resources, the university is highlighting the importance of therapy and support at this trying time for anyone impacted by the tragedy.
